Asthma Management
Asthma is the most common chronic disease facing children, accounting for more than 14 million missed days of school, and is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization of children under 15 years old. In order to improve children’s asthma management, Steps has partnered with CommunityCARE to develop an Asthma Action Plan. This plan will be distributed to New Orleans-area Medicaid pediatricians and is also available to school nurses. This one-page plan includes emergency contact numbers, medication names, and the medication schedule for the student. In order to facilitate the sharing of information between area physicians and school nurses, the Asthma Action Plan is printed on a triplicate form: one copy stays with the medical record at the physician’s office, one copy goes home with the child, and one copy goes to the school nurse.
