The Corner Store Initiative

Local stores can help make New Orleans a healthier city by participating in the Corner Store Initiative. This project aims to offer healthier food options to customers of neighborhood corner stores, convenience stores and delis. A similar project in Rockland County, NY reported increased sales as a result of the program.

Participating stores agree to stock at least two new items of their choice from the following food categories: fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy or whole grain products. In exchange, they receive resources designed to increase sales of healthier food items:

  • Free in-store display to promote healthy food items
  • Free stickers to identify new healthier items being stocked
  • Free promotional window posters
  • Free health information handouts for customers
  • Free newspaper and/or radio advertising promoting the store as a Steps Corner Store
  • Free listing on the Steps to a Healthier New Orleans website
  • Free promotion at community gatherings, including local Farmer’s Markets or clinics
