AsthmaAsthma is a chronic lung disease in which the bronchial airways become inflamed. The inflammation can be brought on by allergies, viral respiratory infections or airborne irritants. The inflammation causes increased production of mucus and muscle contraction which can lead to an asthma attack. Signs and symptoms of asthma include: - Wheezing
- Coughing
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
Asthma episodes are often triggered by some stimulus. Common triggers of asthma are exercise, infections, allergies, weather and other irritants. Common allergens: house dust, molds, pets, pollen Common irritants: cigarette smoke, air pollution, strong odors, aerosol sprays, paint fumes Breathing cold air can also provoke an asthma episode. Wearing a scarf loosely over the nose and mouth can help avoid cold air induced asthma. Asthma triggers must be recognized and avoided. Reduced exposure to triggers can improve control of asthma.
